What's involved in being a host?

The primary requirement is a clean and comfortable home with one or more, single/twin/double rooms in good decorative order available for guests’ accommodation. The minimum is a standard single bed, wardrobe, desk, chair and reading lamp, but many rooms will exceed this requirement. Twin rooms may also be required from time to time.

Accommodation may be on a bed and breakfast, half-board, or sometimes a Executive basis. We recognise that hosts may not always wish or be able to have guests at particular times. Also we recognise the need to ensure the best match between host and guests (factors like diet, pets, smoking, etc. all need to be taken into account).

We see hosting as a rewarding two-way process. The host is paid for providing the accommodation (our rates are competitive and we aim to pay hosts before, or very soon after, the student departs) but can also meet a range of pleasant and interesting guests. Our students are, typically, on business or language courses and are often sponsored by their employers. The student enjoys comfortable and convenient accommodation and the opportunity to become more familiar with our language and culture. The host family can often play an important part in this London experience.

Students are encouraged to make advance contact with hosts so that arrival and stay get off to a good start and go well, but we are always on hand to deal with any issues or problems should they arise. Arrival/departure arrangements vary with some students travelling to a host's home, while others may need to be collected/returned to a local arrival/departure point. All this is arranged by agreement and we oversee it, to ensure it runs smoothly. Most hosts will be at work during the day time. Arrivals and departures are usually handled at weekends.

For new hosts we conduct home visits and interviews. If we agree to go ahead then a standard contract is set up to safeguard everyone's best interests and set out how things will work. It does not commit the host to taking guests or to us providing them – this will be by mutual agreement.
